Interview Technique

Although the interview process is becoming less subjective and more structured - with increased use of psychometric, aptitude or role-suitability testing - first impressions still count. Always remember, however structured the interview, the secret to success lies in being prepared.

The more knowledge you have about the organisation and the role, the better you can tailor your answers to demonstrate your experience and suitability. We will be able to supply you with all the information you need and fully brief you on the areas you should highlight or avoid.

Successful interview performance is a technique you can perfect and we can show you how.

DO:

  • Research the organisation thoroughly - look at their website, read the annual report etc
  • Prepare answers to standard questions such as, why you want the job, where it fits in with your career plan, your strengths/ weaknesses and be prepared to give examples of previous scenarios and how you have handled these.
  • Prepare some questions for the interviewer, which demonstrate your research on, and interest in, the company. e.g what systems do they use? How is business at the moment? What is the structure of the team? Do you offer any training?
  • Arrive on time and be pleasant to everyone you meet including the receptionist. Shake hands firmly.
  • In a panel interview, make sure you talk to everyone rather than directing your answers at one or two people only. Look the interviewer in the eye and smile when you converse.
  • Ask several questions about the role e.g. To whom does the job report? Why has it become vacant? Remember that an interview is a two way process. Make sure you leave the interview with a full understanding of the role.
  • Explain why you think you are an ideal candidate. Emphasise the specific skills you can offer the company.
  • Make sure the interview reaches a positive conclusion, leaving a favourable impression in the employer's mind.
  • Look confident, relax and don't fidget.

DON'T:

  • Forget the basics. Make sure you know where to go for the interview. Be there on time. Ensure you are well presented (in a business suit for women and a jacket, shirt and tie for men) and know the interviewers full name and correct pronunciation.
  • Criticise current or previous employers.
  • Answer a question with another question and do not just answer with a 'yes' or 'no', without expanding on the point.
  • Do not ask questions about salary, holidays or bonuses at the initial interview. However be aware of your market value and be prepared to specify your required package if asked. Newfuture will negotiate a package on your behalf.
